what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at.

this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.

the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…

I simply must torment you a bit with these, let us see some of my personal favourites! (part one due to the image limit)

let us start with the kiss on the cheek (eyes averted! oh the pose! these were taken between 1910-1940)

or the nearly opposite energy (how daring!) of the kiss or caress with direct eye contact (1910-1930)

and then the innocent – yet so flirty – classic of the park encounter! (1890-1920)

and then the famed kiss on the bare shoulder – what an idea, what a vibe, such intimacy! (1910-1930)

and oh, I am not done, look at this – the adoration of the woman! look at this expression, this pose, this decorum! (1910-1940)

and then some of my favourites from the more playful or direct category, enjoy (1910-1930):

and, at last (thank you for still being here and witnessing my recent fascination with vintage polish photography) my three absolute favourites outside of any particular categories (1910-1930)

idea: scene with two characters eagerly stripping each other clearly about to bone, but they keep getting interrupted by finding carefully concealed weapons in each other’s clothing, so they keep just unholstering, revealing and unstrapping increasingly ludicrous amounts of hidden guns and knives as the clothes come off, and it’s lowkey killing the mood a little

findingfeather

Alternatively: it's not killing the mood at all but it's totally making both of them giggle like they're twelve and possibly get lowkey competitive in a subconscious way about who has the most to drop.

beyondthisdarkhouse

The more that I think of it the more I'm seeing the incredible intimacy of letting someone know where you keep your backup knife.

Like my god, the trust involved in letting someone undress you and learn your secrets instead of popping into the bathroom to change where they can't see and hiding all your weapons under the sink

Ladies and gentlefriends, I want to get more weird mail and I want to send more weird mail back. I feel as though this is a problem we can solve together.

I have a PO box and a writing desk. Someone please give me an excuse to use them.

hellenhighwater

Send me your weird, your morbid, your too-strange-to-be-true--and I will respond to whatever I get!

NO LILIES NEAR THE KITTIES. NOT EVEN IN THE SAME ROOM. (I see mostly daffodils and stuff but just in case someone sees this and wants to do a kitty photoshoot.)

hellenhighwater

An excellent point! I was actually being so careful to avoid our lilies (we've got a couple totally unique varieties that I'm excited to see bloom this year, though they haven't opened yet) that I totally forgot that daffodils and cats are also a bad combo.

Vice didn't actually ingest anything so I'm not too worried, but I should have kept him entirely away from them. He was just so interested in the flowers!

That strange feeling of longing when you are at a train station, in a 24/7 open market, when you are buying a coke from a vending machine, watching the city lights glow from your window, when you're walking aimlessly on a busy street after 5 pm, that feeling as if something is missing in your life and it will never come back although it was never there in the first place; that inexplicable urban sadness.

Hi! I found recently and i wanted to ask you, How yo can write a character with any emotions? I know it sounds weird, but i have an idea where a has to sacrifice her soul, so she loses her personality and her emotions, so What can i do? Hope yo have a good day! ✌🏻

sunnydwrites answered:

Hey, thanks so much for your ask! I’ve actually written a couple of characters like this before, whether it’s through mind control or otherwise. Here are the things that have helped me the most!

Writing Emotionless Characters

Firstly, objectivity will be your best friend. Opinions? Never heard of them. Keep your language as neutral and as objective as possible, like you’re looking at everything through a strictly observational lens. Things aren’t pretty or ugly or any word that produces emotion - they just are. This applies especially if this is a PoV character we’re talking about; really sell the point on a lack of emotions.

This is likely going to take a wicked amount of editing because, by nature, humans are emotional creatures. We write and describe and create with emotion, and that works in both good and bad ways for us. In this specific context, it’s not… the best.

But what are we if we have no emotions, no personalities? Some folks could use the word animalistic, but I think it applies in a different context. When your character doesn’t really have things that matter to them or that impact them emotionally, the top priority becomes surviving. Rather than pretty or ugly, are things dangerous or safe? Are they trustworthy or suspicious? When they do things, it’s because they need to; it’ll bring them closer to safety, or further from danger.

Relationships? Forget about those, unless they need someone to help keep them alive. With a loss of emotions likely comes a loss of empathy, so it’s important to remember that they may not realize the impact of the things they do or say. Consequently, they may be a bit confused about why their actions have an impact.

But why? With a loss of empathy, something else comes to fill the gap: egocentrism. They find it hard to put themselves into someone else’s shoes, and it becomes the default that they care about themselves. Take 100% liberty to relate this back to the question of survival. It doesn’t matter how it affects others, as long as it doesn’t hurt our dearest emotionless character.

I love writing soul-controlled characters, and this is a topic I could delve into for days. Here are just a few things to get you started - I hope this helps, and best of luck with your character!

Thank you so much! I would love to hear more about this topic! (I did the question, but i was shy to out my username 😅)

sunnydwrites

No worries! This is one of my favorite character types to write so I could definitely talk about it a little bit more.

Morals can be a tricky situation. Emotions and morals are very different, so you’ll have to explore what they lost. If their emotions are gone, they could be compared to an animal as noted above. But if their memories are still in tact, the story could be a little different.

And what if their memories are in-tact? What happens when your character realized they can’t feel anything like they used to? It’s just a thought because they have no emotions, but reflection on one’s own memories in a context like that can go a whole bunch of different ways.

If they’ve lost their emotions / personality, they may have also lost some impulse control. If they don’t know how to feel in-control, then this is almost a guarantee... which could make the previous paragraph a lot more dangerous.

And suddenly I have emptied my brain on everything I have right now. I hope that helps! Give me a few days to recharge or a specific situation and oh my word I could go ham.
